Tools for Lead

Easy AALM. The All Ages Lead Model (AALM) has been a difficult tool to use, requiring a PC that needs careful tweaking.  It is written in Fortran, an ancient coding language indeed.  Yet as the pre-eminent way to estimate blood lead levels (BLL) from various environmental inputs (food, soil, air, etc), it is a much needed tool.

We have developed an easier way to access the AALM.  You may download a version that is a ‘wrapper’ of the original code in Python that can be used on both Mac and PC operating systems.  This system has been well tested and emulates the original AALM.  We thank Max Fuller for making this possible.

Estimating Lead Burden for Various Sources.  Lead Burden is simply the sum of all of the BLL increases caused by a particular source.  It can be compared against the total burden of a country to determine how significant the source is in causing lead poisoning, and thus assist in prioritizing interventions.  The concept of Lead Burden was developed by Rich Fuller, Howard Hu and others in 2025 in this paper.

Evaluating a particular source for burden can often be accomplished with assistance of AALM, and some careful analysis.  This paper describes how to evaluate a source of lead in soil, food, or other and estimate the amount that the source contributes overall to lead poisoning within a country or community.
